Fuel Scarcity Police arrest 10 fuel hawkers for causing traffic gridlock

Ten fuel hawkers have been arrested in the Oshodi and Ikeja area of Lagos State for causing traffic gridlock as they try to sell petrol to interested buyers.


According to Punch, the men were taken into custody on Sunday, April 3, 2016, by the Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit.

The task force initiated arrested 25 men, but later trimmed it down to 10. Eight jerry-cans filled with petrol were seized from the suspects.

Adebayo Taofiq, the spokesman for the task force confirmed the arrest. He said, “The Chairman of the task force, SP Olayinka Egebyemi, ordered that there should be vehicular sanity around all
filling stations in the state."

"During our operation on Sunday, 25 miscreants, including those hawking fuel by the roadsides around filling stations were arrested."

"Ten were released after screening and the 15 would be charged to court for environmental offences according to the law."

The recent petrol scarcity has caused a lot of hardship to Nigerians, who have to endure long queues at filling stations in order to get fuel into the vehicles.T his scarcity has also led to a rise in the price of goods and services.
