Bronx boxer Joe DeGuardia dies at age 86, trained thousands of young fighters

Professional boxer Joe DeGuardia, who trained and mentored a generation of fighters, has died at 86.

DeGuardia is survived by his wife, Dorothy; sons Joseph, Donald, Eric, and Dean; daughters Lynne, Denise and Raven; grandchildren Jessica, Salvatore, Jesse, Frank, Dominique, Joseph, Andrew, Louis, Briana, Nicolette, London, Deanna, and Lorenzo, and great-grandchildren Gabriel and Julius; and his sisters Angela Maresca and Mary Taccetta. His son Rick Jay DeGuardia died Nov. 25, 2015.

A wake will be held Friday at Joseph A. Lucchese Funeral Home in the Bronx from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral Mass is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at the Our Lady of Solace Church.
