Adele (Metropolitan) |
As the winners come and go, the night wasn’t all highlights and fireworks. Some stars lost heavily. The Weeknd, Lauryn Hill, and guess who? Adele!
Adele delivered a performance that was panned by many, sounding off key in a bizarre contrast to her usual perfection—but like The Weeknd, it appears that it may not have been her fault.
“There was, during Adele’s performance, a technical glitch,” says Portnow, the president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. “The microphone dropped inside the piano …
the microphone hitting strings means that when the hammer hits the strings, it sounds like something’s in there.” Or, as Adele gracefully summed it up: “Shit happens.”
Lauryn Hill Concert Live (Pulse ) |
Lauryn Hill received no nomination for an award this year, but she was set to join The Weeknd in a surprise performance.
Unfortunately, despite appearing at dress rehearsals, she didn’t make it to the Staples Center in time for her appearance, says Neil Portnow, the president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. He flatly said a statement issued by her camp–claiming she didn’t have enough time to prepare–was simply incorrect.
