School sends girls home because their trousers were too tight 'after measuring hems with rulers'

Too tight: Trousers at Barnsley Academy have to be a minimum of 10cm at the hem

A girl was excluded from school after staff checked her trousers with rulers and said they were too tight.

Angry mum Jane Ogden, 36, said a rule of a minimum 10cm width at the hems was introduced this month.

Daughter Ellie Young, 14, was sent home from Barnsley Academy last week – 19 other girls were also excluded.

Jane, 36, who has a second daughter Mollie Young, 12, who also attends the school, said: “The teachers are measuring trousers with rulers.

“They are lining the children up when they go in to school in the morning and do it in groups of tens.”

Strict rules: Barnsley Academy in South Yorkshire

Jane spent £72 on school trousers for her seven children at the start of the academic year.

She said: “The school said that it was an ongoing problem and that they needed to show the children how to be respectful.

“I pride myself in my children giving me respect but I think we should respect them as well.

“Teachers are measuring trousers with rulers. What’s more important, trousers or education?”

“Tight fitting trousers are unacceptable and are not allowed in the academy.”

A spokesperson for the school, said: “The academy has a strict uniform policy which parents and students are fully aware of and which is being properly enforced.

“All students are expected to adhere to the policy.
