Man drives into Gowanus Canal after fleeing hit-and-run crash that injured woman who was with 1-year-old
The driver struck a Toyota Camry, injuring a mother who was with her 1-year-old daughter, as he turned left off of Court St. onto Degraw St. before driving straight into the 1.8 mile waterway — which has been a dumping ground for factory waste and raw sewage for years — around 11:15 a.m., police said.
“It doesn't look like he tried to stop. There's no skid marks,” a police official said at the scene.
Investigators say the mother and child were wounded in the initial collision, about four blocks from the canal. The woman, 47, may have been putting the child in the Toyota when the man struck their sedan and ran over her foot, according to police.
The woman and child were taken to Methodist Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition.
The man has been arrested also.
