Quite a number of outgoing and fun seeking people who chose to go to the National theatre, Iganmu, yesterday got the fright of their lives when some hoodlums suddenly barged in, causing several people to flee to safety.
While some got away from the perpetrators of the evil act, others were not as lucky as they were forcefully made to part with some of their valuables. The incident, according to reports, happened around 5pm on Christmas day.
Affected Lagosians who spoke to some reporters at the venue described their experience as traumatic, stating that far too many pickpockets and petty thieves roamed the premises, stealing items from the unsuspecting visitors to one of the most historic sites in the country.
Philip Patrick, a 19-year old student and eyewitness who said he had gone to with his siblings to spend Christmas Day at the National Theatre, lamented the way pickpockets were harassing visitors. He added,
“We were having a picnic and suddenly, we saw people running in different directions. We also saw a commercial bus speeding around the complex. No one could explain exactly what was happening but we had to run for safety first.
“One of the pickpockets almost stole my camera but he returned it immediately I saw his hand coming out of my pocket. I also saw the same man stealing from other people.”
Another witness, Mrs. Anabel Gbenro, a teacher, described the incident as very terrifying, adding that the level of security at such a public place which attracts several people should have been made tighter that what she met there yesterday, especially given the peculiarity and importance of such a day as Christmas.
“I have come here with my family to give them a tour of a historic place in our country, but suddenly we saw people running to different directions. It is annoying that hoodlums are roaming everywhere, taking items from innocent people who have come to relax. The security arrangement should be tighter,” she said.
Reportedly however, the policemen at the Theatre were able to apprehend some of the hoodlums.
