Mayor Yvan Mayeur canceled an annual fireworks show because of the threat of terrorist attacks in the Belgium capital.

The Wednesday announcement follows what authorities characterized as a "serious threat" of attacks directed at police, soldiers and popular attractions in the city.

"We are forced to cancel considering the risk analysis done by the Crisis Center," he told the French-language RTBF network.

Last year, Mayeur said, 100,000 people turned out in Brussels to ring in the new year.

"In these circumstances, we can't check everyone," Mayeur said.

Brussels was home to four of the radical Islamic attackers who killed 130 people in Paris Nov. 13.

Earlier this week, authorities announced the arrest of two people connected to a suspected plot to carry out attacks in Brussels during the holidays.
