Boko Haram Has Destroyed 350 Teachers In Borno
Reports from Borno state have it that dreaded terrorist group, Boko Haram has killed 350 teachers and destroyed over 512 schools over the years.
According to Daily Sun, this was disclosed by the executive chairman, Borno State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Shettima Bukar Kullima yesterday.
He disclosed further that if number is translated into classrooms, the terrorist group has destroyed over 1000 classrooms, as well as instructional materials for schools.
Kullima, who spoke after the opening ceremony of the 14th quarterly meeting of Universal Basic Education (UBEC) in Abuja, however informed that he could not attest to the number of children who were lost or have been missing since the insurgency took effect since most of the areas are still occupied by Boko Haram and cannot be accessed.
He said: “Boko Haram insurgency has afflicted the basic education delivery in Borno State.
“The terrorists have destroyed not fewer then 512 schools, when you translate this to classrooms, it is over 1000 classrooms. In addition, they also killed 350 teachers. The number of children are yet to be accounted for because most of the areas that are still under the occupation of Boko Haram are not safe for us to go into and take a head count. It is quite impossible.
“In most of the peaceful areas, particularly Maidugri, Jere, Shani, Hawul, Bayo, Kwayo Kusar, schooling is going on there. Within Maiduguri and IDP camps, schools are functioning. The state government is aggressively pursuing the construction of schools. We are yet to get support from anywhere else. We are worse than conquered territory, so because of that only the state government is shouldering all the responsibilities.
“As for books, we’ve got all the books that are being distributed but then the vandals are destroying the schools along with instructional materials. The few areas that are functioning have text books, although most of them are at variance with the curriculum that is being practised.”
This news is coming about 24 hours after the Nigerian president was reported to have made a u-turn on his December deadline for crushing the insurgents, stating that it was just a time frame which could be modified.
